October 5th is Poetry Day

It's Poetry Day, so have a great time speaking things in rhyme. Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Poetry should... should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts, and appear almost as a remembrance.

Do you know that a poem begins with a lump in the throat and that poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world ? And poetry is man's rebellion against being what he is? You will find poetry nowhere unless you bring some of it with you.

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute.  We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race.  And the human race is filled with passion.  And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life.  But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.  But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things. Poetry is plucking at the heartstrings, and making music with them.

National Poetry Day will be October 5, 2006. The Poetry Society has decided on the theme of "Identity" for National Poetry Day 2006, taking seriously one of life's crucial issues in today's culture.
